Where Google Wallet state IDs are available on Android

States in the U.S. are integrating driver's licenses and state IDs into the Google Wallet app for Android users. To add a state ID, users must open the Google Wallet app, tap “Add to Wallet,” select “ID,” choose “Driver’s license or state ID,” pick their state, and follow the instructions, which include capturing images of the ID and a verification video. Approved digital IDs will appear in the app and can be rearranged or removed remotely. Supported states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, and North Dakota, with upcoming support for Arkansas, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. Digital IDs can be used at TSA checkpoints in select airports and for identity verification with car rental services. Google is implementing Zero-Knowledge Proof technology for secure identity verification. Users can also create an ID pass from a U.S. passport for TSA security at supported airports, which involves taking a picture of the passport, scanning its security chip, and recording a verification video. This digital passport ID can also be used via NFC or QR code, but users must carry the physical passport while traveling.

Computers still using Windows 10 operating systems will be removed from the network Oct. 1

West Virginia University (WVU) will remove all computers operating on the outdated Windows 10 system from its network effective October 1. This decision affects all campuses, including the Health Sciences Center, and follows a two-year campaign to transition to Windows 11. The deadline for upgrading devices is September 30, and replacement is recommended for devices that cannot be updated. Microsoft will cease support for Windows 10 this fall, which means remaining devices will not receive security updates, posing a security risk. Exemptions to this policy may be considered but will be rare and must be requested promptly.

Google Wallet brings digital ID support to UK, more US states

Residents in the U.K. can now integrate their passports as a digital ID within Google Wallet, allowing for secure age and identity verification. This feature is part of a collaboration with the Rail Delivery Group, enabling train travelers to use digital IDs for select Railcards. Google is also discussing further applications with the U.K. government, such as for alcohol purchases. The digital ID feature allows users to create passes using their passports, which can be verified with a tap on their smartphones, although they do not replace physical IDs and cannot be used at airports. The process involves capturing images of the ID and a selfie video for verification. Google Wallet incorporates Zero Knowledge Proof technology to enhance user privacy, ensuring personal information remains secure during identity verification. Additionally, Google is expanding digital ID access in various U.S. states, allowing residents to add government-issued IDs to Google Wallet and facilitating domestic travel without a driver's license. Future capabilities will include account recovery and access to online health services. Google Wallet will also expand to 50 additional countries, allowing users to view and utilize digital passes.

E-News | WVU departments to replace computers that can’t upgrade to Windows 11

All computers at West Virginia University (WVU) still using Windows 10 must be replaced by September 30, 2025, unless they can be upgraded to Windows 11. Computers remaining on Windows 10 after this deadline will be removed from the WVU network. Faculty and staff using Windows 10 should work with their IT support teams to assess upgrade options or explore alternatives with Information Security. Information Technology Services (ITS) has begun upgrading WVU-managed computers to Windows 11 but found many machines incompatible. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 after October 2025, meaning no security updates will be provided for devices still using it. Major WVU systems have been tested with Windows 11 to minimize upgrade disruptions.

West Virginia University (WVU) has mandated that all computers running Windows 10 must be upgraded to Windows 11 or replaced by September 30, 2025. Computers not upgraded or replaced by this date will be removed from the WVU network to maintain security. Faculty, researchers, and staff using Windows 10 should collaborate with their IT support teams for upgrades or alternatives. The Information Technology Services (ITS) department has begun upgrading WVU-managed computers and identified many that are incompatible with Windows 11. Recommended Windows computers can be found on the Mountaineer Marketplace. Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 after October 2025, meaning devices on this system will not receive security updates. All major WVU systems and services have been confirmed compatible with Windows 11.
