Felipe Falanghe began his journey in PC gaming by playing Flight Simulator 4 on his father's laptop, which sparked his interest in modding and game development. In 2010, while at a marketing firm called Squad, he was given the opportunity to create Kerbal Space Program, which became one of PC Gamer's highest-rated games. Currently, he is playing the remastered version of Oblivion and enjoys the first-person shooter BattleBit, as well as Old School RuneScape, which he played back in 2005. He keeps Fragile Allegiance and Full Throttle installed on his system. Falanghe has logged nearly 2,000 hours in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 combined and considers Flight Sim and Fragile Allegiance as games he will never uninstall. He uses OBS for remote work and OneCommander for file management. His desktop is somewhat cluttered, with a preference for the classic Windows 10-style Start menu.

My mother had a strong aversion to Windows 8 but eventually upgraded to Windows 10 and later embraced Windows 11. Windows 11 will soon update its File Explorer to display file sizes in KB, MB, and GB instead of just KB. This change is expected to be welcomed by many users, although some may find the adjustment challenging. There is a discussion about user preferences regarding changes in familiar features and the potential for Microsoft to retain legacy options alongside new enhancements.

Windows 11: Movable and Smaller Taskbar in Beta Test

Microsoft is expanding the testing of its redesigned taskbar for Windows 11 to the Beta Channel of the Windows Insider Program with the release of Beta Build 26220.9022 on July 31, 2026. This update allows selected participants to reposition the taskbar along any edge of the screen—top, left, right, or bottom—and introduces a more compact variant that reduces icon size and overall height. Users can adjust their taskbar position through the Settings menu under Personalization, and Windows will adapt associated flyouts and animations accordingly. The implementation aims to restore flexibility lost when Windows 11 was launched, where the taskbar was fixed to the bottom of the screen. However, some features remain under development, and limitations exist for alternative positions, including incomplete touch gestures and a simplified search box. The compact taskbar feature currently only supports reduced height at the top or bottom positions. Microsoft is also exploring taskbar positioning across multiple monitors but has not guaranteed different positions for each screen. The recent updates include renewed certificates for the Windows Insider Program and additional builds, with the timeline for stable release of these taskbar adjustments still uncertain.

Microsoft Ended Windows 10 Support, but You Don’t Necessarily Need a New PC

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10, which means it will no longer receive technical assistance, feature updates, or security patches. Microsoft has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which has been extended to October 2027, allowing users to continue receiving essential security updates if their device meets specific criteria. Eligibility for ESU includes running Windows 10, version 22H2 Home, Professional, Pro Education, or Workstations edition, having the latest Windows update installed, being signed in with an administrator Microsoft account, and enabling Windows Backup. ESU is free for users utilizing Windows Backup; otherwise, a one-time fee or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points is required. For devices not qualifying for ESU, alternatives include installing third-party antivirus software, upgrading to Windows 11, or switching to Linux. To enroll in ESU, users can navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, where an Enroll Now link will appear if eligible.

Minecraft’s system requirements are being raised for the first time in 17 years.

Mojang Studios has updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition for the first time in 17 years. The recommended memory requirement has increased from 4GB to 16GB. The new minimum requirements for Full HD resolution (1920x1080) at 30 frames per second (fps) include a CPU with four or more cores, a GPU supporting Vulkan 1.3 with at least 2GB of VRAM, and 8GB of memory for dedicated GPUs or 12GB for integrated GPUs. The recommended specifications for 60fps with 'Fancy' graphics settings include 16GB of RAM and 6GB or more of VRAM, with suggested GPUs like the GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. The old and new requirements show significant increases in memory and processing power, with the new minimum requirements including Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 or later, and various CPU and GPU specifications. While systems not meeting the new minimum can still run the game, performance may vary, and future updates may affect compatibility. The update is part of a transition to Vulkan technology for improved performance and functionality.
