Microsoft has introduced a new yellow alert in the Start menu of Windows 11, titled “Action advised – back up your PC,” urging users to back up their files and app data using OneDrive. The alert emphasizes the importance of cloud backup and directs users to the OneDrive-based Windows Backup app. Users in the European Union may see different options, while those in the United States currently do not have alternatives for third-party backup solutions. The alerts cannot be disabled but can be temporarily dismissed. Additionally, users frequently encounter prompts for various Microsoft services, such as reminders to engage with Bing features after installing the Bing Wallpaper app, which includes suggestions to change browser settings to favor Bing. Users can choose to delay these changes or close the prompts without immediate alterations.

Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2023, meaning users will no longer receive free security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft. While Windows 10 will still function, the lack of cumulative updates may expose systems to vulnerabilities. Microsoft Defender Antivirus will continue to receive virus definition updates until 2028, but relying solely on it may not ensure comprehensive security. Users may face compatibility issues with older applications as developers shift towards Windows 11. Microsoft has introduced an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for regular users, offering critical security patches until October 13, 2026, available for free under certain conditions or for a one-time fee for others. Enrollment is open until the program concludes in 2026.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, ceasing to provide new patches and security updates. Users can enroll in the Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates program to receive critical security updates for an additional year, until October 2026, for a fee. Alternatively, users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points for a free year of updates or use the Windows Backup App to qualify for the free updates. Upgrading to Windows 11 is free if the PC meets the system requirements. Users whose PCs do not qualify for Windows 11 may consider replacing their device or exploring other operating systems like macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux. Nearly half of all Windows PCs globally still run Windows 10, highlighting the potential security risks of remaining on an unsupported operating system.
