Improving your Windows Insider experience

The Windows Insider Program is undergoing changes to improve user experience based on feedback from the community. The channel structure will be simplified into two main options: Experimental and Beta. The Experimental channel will provide early access to features under development, while the Beta channel will showcase features planned for near-term release without gradual rollouts. Users will have the option to select specific Windows core versions and enable or disable features through a new Feature flags page. Additionally, transitioning between channels will now allow for in-place upgrades, preserving apps and settings, except when moving from Experimental Future Platforms. All Insiders will be transitioned to either the new Beta or Experimental channel, with specific transitions outlined for current users in the Beta, Dev, and Canary channels. Commercial customers will see similar changes, while those in the Windows Server Insider Program will not experience alterations.

Microsoft begins removing Copilot from Windows 11, starting with Notepad, Snipping Tool

Microsoft has removed the Copilot branding from the Notepad app for Windows Insiders, replacing it with a "Writing tools" icon in the latest update (version 11.2512.28.0). Despite the removal of the logo, AI functionality remains intact, and users can disable the feature through the Settings menu under "Advanced Features." The Snipping Tool has also eliminated the Copilot button and currently shows no AI integration. Microsoft is scaling back unnecessary Copilot integration in various apps, including Notepad and Snipping Tool, while still maintaining underlying AI capabilities.

Marcus leads Design and Research across Windows & Devices, overseeing aspects from Windows and Windows Cloud to user experience research and industrial design for Surface and Xbox. He has expanded into the Windows Insider Program to enhance community engagement and believes successful products arise from collaboration between developers and users. Recently, he has sought feedback from Insiders to improve the program, leading to several enhancements. The first Insider meetup took place in Seattle, allowing community interaction with the Windows product team. Marcus plans to visit five additional cities for similar events: New York City (April 21), Hyderabad (May 7), Taipei (May 13), San Francisco (June 4), and London (June 23). The team aims to improve communication, user control over features, and will share further details on these improvements soon.
