The Windows NT Start Menu banner was created by programmer Dave Plummer, who used code to render the text and gradient live due to technical constraints and multiple SKUs of the operating system. Plummer rotated the device context to achieve the vertical text layout and used standard GDI calls to render the background gradient effect. Graphics designers were not involved, and Plummer replicated the vision of Windows 95 designers for NT.
