Cybersecurity experts at Microsoft Threat Intelligence have identified a trend where attackers distribute counterfeit gaming tools that install a remote access trojan (RAT) on users' systems. These trojanized executables, such as Xeno.exe or RobloxPlayerBeta.exe, are shared through browsers and chat platforms. The initial executable acts as a downloader, installing a portable Java runtime environment and launching a harmful Java archive, jd-gui.jar. Attackers use built-in Windows tools to execute commands via PowerShell and exploit trusted system binaries, minimizing detection risk. The embedded PowerShell script connects to remote locations, downloads an executable as update.exe, and executes it. The malware erases evidence of the downloader and modifies Microsoft Defender settings to allow RAT components to function undetected. It establishes persistence through scheduled tasks and a startup script named world.vbs, enabling prolonged access to the compromised device. Microsoft Defender can detect the malware and its behaviors, and organizations are advised to monitor outbound traffic and block identified domains and IP addresses. Users are encouraged to scrutinize Microsoft Defender exclusions and scheduled tasks for irregularities and remain cautious about downloading tools from unofficial sources.

Norton has evolved into a comprehensive cybersecurity suite by 2026, transitioning from traditional antivirus software to a holistic solution under Gen Digital Inc. Its offerings include Norton 360, which provides real-time malware and ransomware protection, a built-in unlimited data VPN, password management, dark web monitoring, and identity protection on higher tiers. The Norton 360 Deluxe plan is popular for households, offering high protection scores, a usable VPN, dark web monitoring, cross-platform support, and identity protection features. Users appreciate its ease of use, strong protection record, and the value of the VPN, while some express frustration with upselling, auto-renew pricing, and performance on older machines. Norton competes with brands like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and McAfee, with its all-in-one convenience being a key advantage. It is suitable for families and less tech-savvy users but may not be ideal for those preferring minimalist setups or who have older hardware.

A new Trojan delivery system has been identified in torrent downloads, using a disguised archive as an M2TS video file that includes a subtitle file and a shortcut labeled "CD.link." Clicking the shortcut activates the Trojan. The subtitle file contains both genuine text and harmful code, complicating detection. The malware employs a Living off the Land strategy, utilizing legitimate Windows tools to gain control over devices. This threat has been linked to the film "Battle for Battle," which has been downloaded several thousand times, though it has only been detected in one torrent download so far. The film has received significant recognition, with nine Golden Globe nominations and five mentions on the Oscars shortlist, and will be available digitally on HBO Max starting December 19.

Event Viewer is a built-in diagnostic tool in Windows that logs every event occurring on a PC, helping users troubleshoot performance issues. It categorizes logs into Application, System, Security, and Setup sections, allowing users to focus on relevant categories during troubleshooting. Events are classified as Critical, Error, Warning, and Information, with Critical events indicating potential sources of system crashes. Users can filter logs, research Event IDs, and utilize the Details section for deeper insights. Event Viewer can be paired with Reliability Monitor for a visual overview of system stability. Many third-party diagnostic tools also rely on data from Event Viewer, making it a valuable resource for addressing persistent errors.
