Goodbye, OTPs and magic links: Signing up for new Android apps just got a lot easier

Google has introduced a Verified Email feature for Android applications that simplifies the sign-up process by eliminating the need for magic links and one-time PINs (OTPs). This feature allows users to register for apps using a "cryptographically verified email credential" sourced from their Google account, which is securely stored on their device. It enhances security by enabling app developers to prompt users to create a passkey during registration. The Verified Email feature can also be used for account recovery and re-authentication for sensitive actions. However, it is currently limited to consumer Gmail accounts, and users with Workspace or managed accounts must still use traditional verification methods. Additionally, Google accounts created with non-Google email addresses may require extra verification steps from app developers. The feature is accessible on devices running Android 9 or newer and Google Play Services version 25.49.xx or later.

Databricks Postgres Gets Customer Key Control

Databricks has introduced customer-managed keys (CMK) for its Lakehouse Postgres offering, allowing users to control their data encryption and utilize their own Key Management Service (KMS) from major cloud providers like AWS KMS, Azure Key Vault, or Google Cloud KMS. The Lakehouse Postgres architecture features a hierarchical envelope encryption model with three tiers: the customer-managed root key (CMK), a Key Encryption Key (KEK) used by Databricks' Key Manager Service, and unique Data Encryption Keys (DEKs) for each data segment. If a CMK is revoked, access to the data is denied, and active compute instances are terminated, serving as a failsafe for high-compliance workloads. The implementation allows for granular control over key management and supports seamless key rotation without data re-encryption or downtime. All cryptographic operations are logged within the customer's cloud audit services, available to Databricks Enterprise tier customers.

Your Samsung phone just got a big upgrade for editing photos, videos, and documents

Samsung has launched an update to its Galaxy Enhance-X app, now at version 16.3.00.31, featuring a redesigned interface with a three-tab layout: Plugins, Home, and History. The update includes three downloadable plugins: CinematicGlow, FilmStyle, and SkyGuide. New editing tools have been added for photos, videos, and documents, including features for blur fixing, reflection removal, HDR adjustments, and face editing. The "Doc tools" section allows for automatic cleaning and cropping of scanned documents, as well as conversion to JPEGs or PDFs. Batch editing is now possible, and all edited content is saved in standard formats, with the History tab for organization.

Microsoft VP releases free Windows tool inspired by macOS feature

Scott Hanselman, a Microsoft executive, has introduced Peek Desktop, a free utility for Windows users that allows them to hide all open windows with a click on the desktop wallpaper. The tool is available for download on GitHub and enables users to quickly access files and folders. Users can restore their previous window arrangement by clicking on the desktop or tapping the taskbar. Peek Desktop was inspired by a similar feature in macOS Sonoma and has received nine updates since its release two days ago, improving user experience and functionality. There is hope that it may be integrated as a native feature in Windows 11 in the future.

Microsoft’s VP brings macOS-style click to reveal desktop feature to Windows with new tool

Scott Hanselman, VP at Microsoft, has introduced a tool called PeekDesktop for Windows, which allows users to minimize all open windows by clicking on an empty area of their desktop wallpaper. A second click or switching back to any application restores the windows to their original positions. This feature is similar to the "click wallpaper to reveal desktop" function in macOS Sonoma, which has not been available in Windows until now. PeekDesktop is easy to install from GitHub, requires no additional setup, and is compatible with Windows on ARM. It uses minimal system resources and operates through lightweight Windows APIs to manage window states. Users can customize settings from the system tray, and Hanselman is working on enhancements to replicate more macOS-style behaviors.

Paint (25H2)

Microsoft has updated Paint significantly with the rollout of Windows 11, enhancing both its user interface and core functionalities. Key updates include the introduction of a Dark mode, an updated Text tool, layer capabilities similar to Photoshop, and support for transparent PNG files. Paint now features AI-driven tools, some of which require a Microsoft account and a Microsoft 365 subscription, while others are accessible on any PC or require a Copilot+ PC. Customization options in Paint are limited; users cannot disable any image creation or editing features but can change the app theme and configure watermark settings for AI-generated content. The toolbar can be set to auto-hide, and users can view their work in full screen by pressing F11. New features include the ability to save projects with multiple layers, a Remove background tool, an Image Creator for generating images from text prompts, and a Generative erase tool for removing objects from images. Copilot+ PCs unlock additional features that operate locally, such as Object select, Sticker generator, Cocreator, and Generative fill, which requires specific hardware capabilities.

I didn’t know how much I needed Gemini’s scheduled actions until I tried them

Megan uses scheduled actions to receive weekly summaries of consumer tech news and curated series recommendations, helping her stay informed and manage her viewing preferences. She wishes the feature were available to free users with some limitations.

Microsoft Locked Out VeraCrypt, WireGuard, and Windscribe from Pushing Windows Updates

Microsoft implemented a mandatory account verification process for all partners in the Windows Hardware Program who had not completed verification since April 2024, effective October 16, 2025. This requirement necessitated that partners verify their identities using a government-issued ID matching the name of the primary contact in the Partner Center. Failure to meet this deadline or pass verification resulted in account suspension, preventing further submissions. This affected the ability of developers to sign Windows kernel drivers, leading to suspensions for notable open source projects like VeraCrypt, WireGuard, and Windscribe. Mounir Idrassi, the developer of VeraCrypt, reported his account was terminated without notice, and Jason Donenfeld of WireGuard faced similar issues. Windscribe experienced a prolonged resolution process despite having a verified account for over eight years. Following these suspensions, Scott Hanselman from Microsoft announced that the accounts would be reinstated and corrective measures were being taken.
