Paint (25H2)

Microsoft has updated Paint significantly with the rollout of Windows 11, enhancing both its user interface and core functionalities. Key updates include the introduction of a Dark mode, an updated Text tool, layer capabilities similar to Photoshop, and support for transparent PNG files. Paint now features AI-driven tools, some of which require a Microsoft account and a Microsoft 365 subscription, while others are accessible on any PC or require a Copilot+ PC. Customization options in Paint are limited; users cannot disable any image creation or editing features but can change the app theme and configure watermark settings for AI-generated content. The toolbar can be set to auto-hide, and users can view their work in full screen by pressing F11. New features include the ability to save projects with multiple layers, a Remove background tool, an Image Creator for generating images from text prompts, and a Generative erase tool for removing objects from images. Copilot+ PCs unlock additional features that operate locally, such as Object select, Sticker generator, Cocreator, and Generative fill, which requires specific hardware capabilities.

Microsoft Locked Out VeraCrypt, WireGuard, and Windscribe from Pushing Windows Updates

Microsoft implemented a mandatory account verification process for all partners in the Windows Hardware Program who had not completed verification since April 2024, effective October 16, 2025. This requirement necessitated that partners verify their identities using a government-issued ID matching the name of the primary contact in the Partner Center. Failure to meet this deadline or pass verification resulted in account suspension, preventing further submissions. This affected the ability of developers to sign Windows kernel drivers, leading to suspensions for notable open source projects like VeraCrypt, WireGuard, and Windscribe. Mounir Idrassi, the developer of VeraCrypt, reported his account was terminated without notice, and Jason Donenfeld of WireGuard faced similar issues. Windscribe experienced a prolonged resolution process despite having a verified account for over eight years. Following these suspensions, Scott Hanselman from Microsoft announced that the accounts would be reinstated and corrective measures were being taken.

Google’s New $3 USB Kit Converts Old Windows 10 PCs to ChromeOS Flex Machines

Google, in collaboration with Back Market, has launched a USB kit for installing ChromeOS Flex on aging Windows 10 PCs for a fee. This kit simplifies the installation process, allowing users to replace their existing Windows system easily. ChromeOS Flex is compatible with various PCs and some Macs, focusing on cloud-based tasks and supporting browser-based and Android applications only. A study indicated that ChromeOS consumes 19% less energy than similar systems. For every USB drive produced, an equivalent weight of electronic waste is recycled. Google plans to provide software updates for Chromebooks for 10 years and for Pixel phones for 7 years. Windows 10 support will end in October 2025, with Microsoft offering a free extended security update until October 2026. Approximately 32% of the market still uses Windows 10, with 121 million enterprise devices estimated to be operating on it. The ChromeOS Flex USB Kit is considered a pilot program, with potential for increased production based on demand.

“This was not opportunistic. It was precision.” — How North Korean hackers used Microsoft Teams and Slack to compromise Windows PCs with an elaborate ploy

On March 30, 2026, axios, a JavaScript HTTP client library, was temporarily compromised by suspected North Korean hackers who hijacked maintainer Jason Saayman's account. This allowed them to publish two malicious versions of axios on npm. The malicious versions were identified and removed within three hours by StepSecurity. A post-mortem blog on GitHub provided security measures for users of Windows, macOS, and Linux, highlighting risks from a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) introduced during the breach. The attack was attributed to a group known as UNC1069, which has been active since at least 2018. Two weeks prior to the breach, Saayman was targeted in a social engineering campaign where attackers posed as a legitimate company founder, leading him to install the RAT via a fake update during a Microsoft Teams meeting. Microsoft Teams was not compromised; it was used as a delivery method for the Trojan. Saayman noted the operation's sophistication.

Currently, no Windows laptop can match the MacBook Neo in hardware quality and startup experience, while macOS offers a more tranquil workspace compared to the distractions of Windows 11. Apple has effectively utilized advancements in processor technology and manufacturing control to produce efficient chips and maintain a coherent ecosystem, making its products increasingly accessible. In contrast, Windows OEMs face challenges with component sourcing, build quality, and reliance on bloatware. There is potential for Microsoft to create a Windows Neo variant that meets user needs, while the sustainability of current business models for Windows OEMs is uncertain.
