The Google I/O event this year focused heavily on artificial intelligence, with the introduction of the Google AI Ultra plan priced at per month. This subscription includes access to the Gemini 2.5 model, Flow with Veo 3, early access to Project Mariner, 30TB of Google One storage, and YouTube Premium. The event's presentations were primarily aimed at developers, with limited consumer-facing innovations. Key topics like Android and Wear OS were presented in a pre-recorded video, suggesting a shift in focus towards AI and Search initiatives. The high subscription cost may deter average consumers from engaging with these new offerings.

YouTube is experimenting with a new user interface design for its Android app, inspired by its Smart TV layout, and is conducting A/B testing on this redesign. Changes include repositioning the video title above the progress bar, relocating the channel icon and subscriber count, and moving the expand button to the top left corner. The forward and back buttons have been removed in fullscreen mode, appearing only when the video is paused. Audience interaction buttons have been repositioned above the progress bar, and YouTube is integrating AI features for Premium users, allowing them to ask questions about the video. New advertisements will also appear when a video is paused.

YouTube is testing a picture-in-picture (PIP) viewing feature for mid-roll advertisements, allowing users to watch ads in a smaller, movable window while continuing to view content. This feature will be available to a select group of users and can be enabled by creators in the "Monetization" settings. The initiative aims to address the challenge of ad blockers and enhance the viewing experience by reducing interruptions from mid-roll ads. YouTube has implemented measures against users with ad-blocking software, including cutting off access to content and a three-strike policy leading to bans. Google emphasized that ads are crucial for YouTube's revenue and support for creators. Additionally, YouTube is experimenting with server-side ads that are less detectable by ad-blockers. Users still have the option to subscribe to YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience.

YouTube has introduced an AI-powered tool called "Jump ahead" that allows Premium subscribers to skip to the most engaging parts of a video by double-tapping. The feature analyzes viewing patterns to guide users to relevant content, enhancing accessibility and engagement. "Jump ahead" is currently only available on the YouTube mobile app for English-language videos in the United States and is set to conclude its experimental phase on June 1.
