In a notable case from the Kemerovo region, a 23-year-old woman has been sentenced for sharing adult films via a torrent program, as reported by the regional prosecutor’s office. The Lenin District Court found her guilty under paragraph “b” of part 3 of Article 242 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which pertains to the distribution and public demonstration of pornographic materials using the Internet.
According to the case materials, the young woman downloaded three adult films onto her laptop through a peer-to-peer file-sharing network—specifically, a torrent application. During the police seizure of her computer, she admitted that she had not taken any measures to restrict access to these files for other users on the network.
In court, the defendant maintained her innocence, asserting that while she did download the films, she did not intentionally share them. The court ultimately imposed a suspended sentence of two years, with a probation period of six months.
Understanding Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks operate on a unique principle where each participant acts as both a client and a server for information transmission. These networks utilize specialized software, with torrents being the most widely recognized. When a user downloads a file, they automatically “share” it, granting access to others, which significantly enhances data exchange speeds.
