Microsoft’s Recall Feature Update
After facing backlash from users and privacy advocates, Microsoft has announced changes to its upcoming artificial intelligence-powered automatic screenshotting feature, Windows Recall. The feature, set to launch on Copilot Plus PCs on June 18, will now be turned off by default. Users who wish to utilize Recall will need to manually enable it.
In a blog post on June 7, Microsoft revealed the decision to disable Recall by default and also removed the latest Windows preview release version 24H2, which included Recall, from the Windows Insider Program. The impact of this removal on the official release of 24H2 in fall 2024 remains uncertain.
Recall is designed to capture activity on a Windows computer through periodic screenshots, using AI to visually retrace steps for easier access to previously opened apps, work, and websites. While Microsoft assured that the images are encrypted and stored locally, privacy concerns were raised regarding potential access by others with physical access to the computer.
Microsoft emphasized its commitment to empowering users through AI while acknowledging the importance of trust in features like Recall. The company’s move to limit Recall on Windows PCs reflects the challenges faced by companies integrating AI technologies into products.
The Copilot Plus PC initiative, a key part of Microsoft’s AI efforts, aims to enhance user experiences with specialized neural processing units for tasks like photo editing, live transcription, and Recall. Microsoft continues to prioritize privacy, safety, and security in developing new capabilities and experiences for its customers.
AI Stumbles
Microsoft is not alone in facing criticism over AI integration. OpenAI disabled a ChatGPT voice following accusations of similarity to a character voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Google also faced backlash for an AI feature repeating racist content and bizarre advice.
Despite these setbacks, companies and governments are pushing forward with AI integration. Apple is expected to unveil AI updates for its devices at the Worldwide Developers Conference, with rumors suggesting opt-in features for users.
As AI continues to evolve, companies must navigate challenges to ensure responsible and beneficial integration for users.
