Storage Sense doesn’t regularly clean up your drive by default

Storage Sense is programmed to clear only user-level files, such as temporary data, items in the Recycle Bin, files in the Downloads folder, and cached OneDrive copies. Notably, it is unable to access the Windows component store, where outdated system files accumulate after updates. Furthermore, it only activates when the storage drive is nearing capacity unless the user opts to adjust the schedule.
But you can schedule it the way it suits you
One surprising aspect for many users is not how Storage Sense operates, but rather when it does. If the feature has never been configured since the installation of Windows 11, it is likely set to run solely when the drive is low on space. This limitation can be frustrating for those with ample storage, as it may lead to the feature remaining dormant. Fortunately, users can easily rectify this by searching for Storage Settings and adjusting the frequency of Storage Sense operations. Options include running it daily, weekly, or monthly. Additionally, users can specify how often the Recycle Bin is emptied or set parameters for deleting files in the Downloads folder that have not been accessed within 14, 30, or 60 days. There is also an option for OneDrive that allows files to be converted into online-only placeholders if they remain unopened for a designated period, with choices of one, 14, 30, or 60 days.
