Microsoft accelerates Control Panel’s inevitable demise as even more settings migrate

Over the past several months, Microsoft has been gradually transitioning features from the traditional Control Panel to the more modern Settings interface in Windows 11. While this shift has been met with anticipation, it has also been marked by a somewhat leisurely pace. The company has been selective in moving tools, often pausing before making further changes. However, recent developments suggest that this pattern may be shifting.

Just two weeks ago, Microsoft made another adjustment, and it appears that additional features are set to follow suit. For those who have grown accustomed to the Control Panel, it may be time to prepare for its eventual retirement.

Microsoft moves some language settings over to Settings

Recent reports from PhantomOfEarth, a keen observer of Windows 11 test builds, indicate that Microsoft is making strides in its transition efforts. Among the latest changes is the migration of certain language options to the Settings panel. This update, however, is not yet available to the general public; it is currently limited to users on the Dev or Beta builds of Windows 11, and even then, it requires manual activation.

The decision to keep this feature under wraps suggests that Microsoft is still addressing some bugs related to its implementation. While the company works through these issues, the hidden status of the feature implies that a broader rollout is likely on the horizon. As the Control Panel prepares for its farewell, many users may find themselves reflecting on the evolution of Windows and the enhancements brought forth by the new Settings interface.

Although the Control Panel has been a staple of Windows for many years, its impending obsolescence may not be mourned by all. In fact, some users, including our editor João Carrasqueira, have articulated compelling reasons why the Settings app offers a more streamlined and modern experience compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless, the nostalgia for the Control Panel’s legacy is sure to linger as Microsoft continues its journey toward a more integrated and user-friendly operating system.
