Microsoft blames Disk Cleanup for Windows 11 24H2’s apparent gigabyte gobbling

In the realm of digital storage, the vast capacities of modern hard drives often render minor losses inconsequential. However, a recent development following the installation of the Windows 11 2003 Update (Windows 11 24H2) has sparked curiosity among users who have encountered an unexpected 8.63 GB of undeletable data.

Microsoft’s Response to User Concerns

Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue, clarifying that the root cause lies not in the loss of recoverable disk space, but rather in a malfunction within the Windows Disk Cleanup tool. The company attributes the situation to a bug that results in a “reporting error.”

Users who have upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 have found that the customary process of cleaning up after a major update has been disrupted by this stubborn chunk of data. According to an entry on the Windows release health page, Microsoft states, “Disk Cleanup might incorrectly report space available for cleanup.”

The company elaborates on this matter, explaining, “After using the Windows Disk Cleanup application, it may display an incorrect amount of disk space that can be freed up in the ‘Windows Update Cleanup’ category.”

To shed light on the specifics, Microsoft provides the following clarification:

Please note this is a reporting error. When ‘Windows Update Cleanup’ is selected and Disk Cleanup is run for the first time, some or all files in that category (for example, 15 GB) are cleaned up correctly and the related disk space is freed as expected. However, after this initial run, the tool may inaccurately report an amount of space still available for cleanup (for example, 88 GB) in the ‘Windows Update Cleanup’ category. This inaccurate amount of disk space is reported even though the space was already freed in the initial run.

In essence, Microsoft reassures users that the current situation is a result of its tools not functioning as intended, rather than an actual loss of disk space. The company concludes with a commitment to resolve the issue, stating, “We are working on a resolution and will provide more information when it is available.”
