Microsoft is making strides in enhancing the update experience for its users by introducing hotpatch updates to Windows 11 24H2, following a successful trial with Windows Server over the past couple of years.
Benefits of Hotpatch Updates
The primary advantage of hotpatching lies in its ability to facilitate security updates without necessitating a system restart. This feature is particularly beneficial for businesses that prioritize uninterrupted productivity. Consequently, Microsoft is currently previewing these updates specifically for Windows 11 Enterprise users.
To utilize the restart-free hotpatching, users must meet certain criteria. Aside from operating on Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2, a Microsoft subscription that includes either Windows Enterprise E3 or E5—such as Microsoft 365 A3/A5 or Microsoft 365 F3—or a Windows 365 Enterprise subscription is required. Additionally, Microsoft Intune is essential for deployment.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft elaborated on the advantages of hotpatch updates:
Hotpatch updates are scoped and provide a complete set of OS security patches. No additional features are included. They are unique in that they take effect immediately upon installation without requiring you to restart your device, helping to ensure focused, rapid protection.
With a proven track record over the last two years on Windows Server, the expansion of hotpatching to Windows 11 Enterprise, version 24H2, presents several notable benefits:
- Devices will receive the same level of security patching as the standard monthly security updates released on Patch Tuesday.
- Hotpatch updates take effect immediately and do not require user intervention.
- Users can maintain both productivity and security without the disruption of a device restart.
Microsoft further explained the mechanics of the hotpatching process:
The first month of each quarter of the calendar year (i.e., January, April, July, and October), devices install the standard monthly security update and restart. This cumulative update contains the latest security fixes, new features, and enhancements. In the following two months, devices are offered hotpatch updates, which include only security updates and install without the need to restart. At the start of the next quarter, the cycle repeats.
This innovative approach significantly reduces the number of required restarts from twelve to just four each year, streamlining the update process for users and enhancing overall efficiency.
