At the recent Build 2025 developer conference, Microsoft unveiled an exciting new feature designed to enhance user experience and customization within Windows 11: the ‘Advanced Settings’ page. This innovative addition empowers both users and developers to tailor their operating system environment more effectively.
Enhanced Customization Options
The ‘Advanced Settings’ can be conveniently accessed through the pathway: Settings > System > Advanced. This new interface replaces the previous ‘For Developers’ tab while preserving all existing functionalities, now with added flexibility.
One of the standout aspects of the ‘Advanced Settings’ is the increased control it offers over the display of files and folders, as well as the management of version control. Users will find a range of options at the top of the settings page, including:
- Show file extensions: Enabling this option allows users to see file types, such as .txt or .jpg, displayed alongside file names.
- Show hidden and system files: This feature reveals files that are typically concealed by Windows, including critical system files.
- Show full path in title bar: Users can opt to display the complete folder path at the top of File Explorer, enhancing navigation clarity.
- Show option to run as different user in Start: This setting provides the ability to launch applications as a different user, adding a layer of versatility.
- Show empty drives: Users can view USB and other drives even when they contain no files, ensuring all storage options are visible.
At the bottom of the ‘Advanced Settings’ page, a new section titled ‘File Explorer + version control’ has been introduced. This feature allows users to link folders that serve as Git repositories, streamlining the workflow for developers. For instance, users can connect folders such as:
- D:GitHubWSL
- D:GitHubterminal
- D:GitHubPowerToys
This integration is particularly beneficial for developers who utilize Git, as it facilitates direct management of code versions from within File Explorer. Additionally, a “Choose folder” button enables users to add more Git folders seamlessly.
In a nod to the developer community, Microsoft has announced that the ‘Advanced Settings’ page will be open-sourced on GitHub, ensuring ongoing maintenance and updates through the Windows Store.
