Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting the Reset and Recovery operations on several versions of Windows, specifically Windows 11 23H2/22H2 and Windows 10. The tech giant has committed to releasing an out-of-band update for the impacted platforms in the near future, potentially as soon as today.
Details of the Issue
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft has cautioned millions of users against utilizing the built-in Reset and Recovery feature following the mandatory security updates rolled out in August. Users are advised to exercise caution as they navigate these functionalities.
The problem arises after the installation of update KB5063875, where attempts to reset or recover devices may result in failure. This complication occurs when users attempt to reset their PCs, utilize Windows Update for troubleshooting, or engage the RemoteWipe CSP feature.
While Windows 11 24H2 remains unaffected, the situation is particularly concerning for the vast number of Windows 10 users who recently celebrated Microsoft’s decision to extend security support beyond October. These users now find themselves in a precarious position, awaiting the emergency out-of-band update.
Community Concerns
Windows Latest has characterized this as a critical issue, suggesting that Microsoft should have retracted the problematic updates (KB5063875 and KB5063709). Reports indicate that an emergency patch may be released as early as the afternoon of August 19, with Microsoft currently testing KB5066189 for version 23H2, although it has yet to be made available on the Update Catalog or through Windows Update.
Compounding the situation, reports have surfaced regarding another August update that has been corrupting PC SSDs during the process of writing large files. This series of mishaps has created a climate of concern among users, particularly in light of Microsoft’s recent apologies for previous issues.
User Awareness
As Windows Latest points out, the current malfunctioning feature does not trigger any warnings from Windows, leaving users unaware of the potential failure of the recovery process. Unless individuals are informed through articles like this one or through Microsoft’s documentation, they may unknowingly proceed with a reset, which could lead to further complications. It is advisable for users to refrain from using the Reset & Recovery features until the issue is resolved.
