Microsoft fixes «printer uprising» in Windows 11 and remote desktop

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting the Remote Desktop Platform (RDP) in its Windows 11 24H2 version. Following a series of reports that began surfacing in February 2025, the company is now implementing an emergency server update aimed at resolving these complications. Users can expect a return to normalcy within 24 to 48 hours as the fix is gradually rolled out.

Understanding the RDP Challenges

The RDP issues first came to light after users installed the optional January Update, which seemed to exacerbate the situation. When sessions were disconnected—whether due to client closure or network interruptions—many users encountered a frustrating scenario where reconnections led to a frozen login screen displaying “spinning dots.” Additionally, some users reported that while SSH sessions appeared to be active, the RDP interface remained blank.

On February 25, Microsoft officially recognized the problem, initially claiming it had been addressed in the February update (KB5052093). However, subsequent updates, particularly the March 2025 patch, only intensified the RDP crashes, prompting further scrutiny from the user community.

Recent Developments and Fixes

In response to the escalating concerns, Microsoft has initiated a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for Windows 11 24H2. This fix is being deployed in stages, with full functionality expected within 48 hours. Users are encouraged to reboot their devices to expedite the resolution process.

In conjunction with the RDP fix, Microsoft has also released update KB5053657, addressing another pressing issue where printers were erroneously printing random characters and data. This glitch, which emerged after the January 11 update, affected USB printers operating in dual modes (USB Print + IPP over USB). Microsoft has confirmed that this bug impacted all recent versions of Windows 11.

For users of Windows 11 23H2, an update correcting the printer issue is already available, while a similar fix for Windows 11 24H2 is anticipated on March 27, 2025. Both resolutions will be included in April’s “Patch Tuesday” updates, ensuring that all Windows 11 users receive these crucial enhancements.

In light of these developments, Microsoft continues to navigate the complexities of software updates, aiming to deliver a more stable and reliable user experience across its platforms.
