Microsoft has a new trick to improve laptop battery life on Windows

Microsoft is currently in the testing phase of an innovative feature for Windows 11 that promises to enhance laptop battery efficiency significantly. The new adaptive energy saver mode is designed to intelligently manage energy consumption by automatically toggling the energy saver settings based on the device’s workload, rather than solely relying on the remaining battery life.

Traditionally, the energy saver mode in Windows 11 has been known to dim the display brightness by 30%, disable transparency effects, and halt background applications. Additionally, it pauses non-critical Windows update downloads and limits the syncing capabilities of certain applications, such as OneDrive, OneNote, and Phone Link. However, the forthcoming adaptive energy saver mode aims to refine this experience.

This feature will be exclusive to devices equipped with a battery and will operate seamlessly without altering screen brightness. As a result, users of laptops, tablets, and handheld devices will find the transition less disruptive. According to the Windows Insider team at Microsoft, “Adaptive energy saver is an opt-in feature that automatically enables and disables energy saver, without changing screen brightness, based on the power state of the device and the current system load.”

Currently, this feature is being trialed with participants in the Canary Channel of Windows 11, and users can anticipate its rollout later this year. While desktop PCs will not support this new adaptive mode, Microsoft has previously extended the main energy saver functionality to all PCs, enabling desktop users to also benefit from reduced electricity consumption.
