Microsoft Issues Emergency Update for Windows Users

In a familiar turn of events, Windows users find themselves navigating yet another emergency update, this time in June. Following a series of out-of-band updates aimed at resolving installation failures in May, Microsoft has now rolled out a new automatic update designed to address issues stemming from the June update.

According to Windows Latest, which first highlighted the initial problem, the June update encountered significant challenges, particularly for users with Easy Anti-Cheat gaming software installed on their systems. The update, identified as Windows 11 24H2 KB5060842, faced scrutiny when Microsoft temporarily paused its rollout, raising suspicions about its stability.

This brief intermission allowed for a patch to be applied to the standard update; however, the fix did not yield the desired results. Consequently, Microsoft opted to withhold the problematic update from affected PCs, leading to the introduction of an emergency update to rectify the situation. The company reassured users that “Windows users likely didn’t experience this issue” since the standard update was not distributed to at-risk devices.

Reports from users indicated that the update was visible but consistently failed to install, presenting the error message: “Some update files are missing or have problems. We’ll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712).”

In response to these complications, Microsoft acknowledged the “compatibility issues” and attempted to implement a fix. However, when this solution also fell short, the company made the decisive move to retract the faulty patch (KB5060842) entirely, replacing it with the new emergency update, KB5063060.

This latest update addresses a “major issue” that caused unexpected reboots on PCs while launching games that utilize Easy Anti-Cheat, including popular titles like Fortnite. The emergency update encompasses all cumulative fixes along with a compatibility workaround, ensuring a smoother experience for users. Microsoft has stated that this out-of-band update will automatically download and install via Windows Update and Microsoft Update on devices with Easy Anti-Cheat installed, as well as on those that have not yet installed KB506842.
