Microsoft is finally releasing ISOs for Windows on Arm

Microsoft has initiated the rollout of the Windows 11 24H2 update, making it accessible through both the Windows update and ISOs. Currently, the available ISOs are exclusively for x64 PCs, leaving Arm64 device users without a direct option. However, with Microsoft’s renewed commitment to the Windows on Arm initiative, the company is poised to broaden the accessibility of Arm-powered Windows devices by announcing the forthcoming release of Arm64 ISOs.

You’ll soon be able to download Windows Arm ISOs just like you do for x64 versions of PCs

At present, the only method to obtain a Windows Arm64 ISO involves registering for the Windows Insider Program, where users can download VHDX files. Unfortunately, this format is tailored for virtual machines, such as Hyper-V, and cannot be directly installed on physical Arm hardware. Microsoft aims to eliminate this barrier by providing Windows Arm ISOs for general download on its website.

While the specific timeline for availability remains unspecified on the Download Windows 11 page, Microsoft has indicated that the Arm device ISOs will be released in the “coming weeks.” Although not officially confirmed, it is anticipated that these ISOs will also be accessible via the Media Creation Tool, simplifying the process for users looking to create installation media for other Windows on Arm PCs.

Windows ISO for Arm devices could also mean that Arm-based custom desktop PCs are coming soon

During this year’s Computex event, Qualcomm hinted at the potential for all-in-one desktop PCs powered by the Snapdragon X Elite chip. However, neither Microsoft nor Qualcomm has provided a timeline for the realization of custom Arm-based desktop PCs. The introduction of Windows ISOs for Arm devices represents a significant advancement, as it alleviates the challenges faced by PC builders in sourcing official ISOs, thereby paving the way for the emergence of custom Arm-based PC configurations.
