The latest preview build reveals that the File Properties window within File Explorer will be updated using the WinUI 3 framework, aligning it more closely with the overall design ethos of Windows 11.
Addressing Legacy Design Elements
This development was first highlighted by Phantomofearth on BlueSky, who observed the introduction of a new framework update to this longstanding Windows component. Historically, Microsoft had not prioritized the refresh of these smaller UI elements, resulting in a patchwork of inconsistencies across various Windows versions. While the company has focused on cosmetic enhancements for major applications, the smaller components remained largely unchanged, contributing to a disjointed user experience.
Currently, Windows 11 operates on a mixture of legacy Microsoft frameworks, leading to a noticeable lack of uniformity. Users often encounter interfaces that hark back to the Windows 7 era during their daily tasks. This eclectic mix includes web-based technologies such as WebView2 and React, among others.
In a bid to streamline the user experience, Microsoft is transitioning to a desktop-only WinUI 3 framework. This shift promises to reduce application latency, enhance user experience, and foster a smoother overall feel. For the first time since the launch of Windows 11 in late 2021, all desktop elements are expected to operate on the WinUI 3 framework. The journey has been lengthy, as Microsoft has faced challenges in porting legacy code without encountering significant issues. Additionally, users may recall that the classic Win32 Control Panel is gradually being integrated into the modern Settings app. This transition, however, is being approached with caution, given the Control Panel’s role in managing various network and printer devices, as well as drivers that necessitate thorough testing to prevent disruptions during the porting process.
