Microsoft’s Vision for the Future of Computing
At the recent Build 2026 event, Microsoft presented an ambitious vision for the future of computing, one that is intricately woven into the fabric of artificial intelligence. Project Solara is not merely a theoretical framework; it is actively taking shape through the development of a new operating system, the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP). This lightweight and secure OS is built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), marking a departure from the traditional Windows environment. MDEP is designed to be unobtrusive, featuring an Agent Shell that can dynamically load and customize various cloud-based agents tailored to user needs.
Rather than functioning as a conventional platform for running traditional applications, MDEP emphasizes an AI-driven approach. To power these forward-thinking agentic devices, tech giants Qualcomm and MediaTek are collaborating to develop specialized silicon.
