Windows 10 Apps Displaying “Open With” Dialog Box Bug
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 apps are experiencing a bug where a “How do you want to open this file?” dialog box is mistakenly displayed when attempting to perform a registered task by right-clicking on the program’s icon.
Windows apps can offer different tasks when right-clicking on the program’s icon in the Start Menu or taskbar, such as “New Message” or “Open Calendar” for the Outlook for Windows app.
Since the April KB5036979 preview update, users have been encountering this issue, where selecting a task will trigger an “Open With” dialog box instead of executing the task properly.
Microsoft advises users to manually open the app and perform the operation within it to avoid this bug affecting the task completion.
Despite the bug, BleepingComputer’s tests showed that the dialog box did not impact the program’s operation and allowed normal usage after closing the prompt.
This bug affects all Windows apps with registered tasks, including Calculator, Microsoft Outlook (New), Microsoft Teams, Snip & Sketch, and Sticky Notes.
Windows 11 Bug Affecting Microsoft Photos App
In addition to the Windows 10 bug, Microsoft has identified a new issue in Windows 11 that prevents the Microsoft Photos app from launching properly.
Users who have updated the Microsoft Photos app from the Windows store on or after June 4, 2024, may encounter difficulties starting the application, with a spinning circle appearing and then disappearing.
If the Procmon monitoring tool is installed, an Access Denied error on Process Exit (‘Exit Status: -2147024891’) may be displayed.
This problem is likely to occur if the “Prevent non-admin users from installing packaged Windows apps” policy or its equivalent policy, “BlockNonAdminUserInstall,” is enabled.
Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this issue and plans to release it in a future update.
