Microsoft says KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates won’t be offered to PCs that meet these conditions – gHacks Tech News

This is why KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates won’t be offered to you

Microsoft has recently provided more information regarding the requirements for installing the KB5034440 and KB5034441 Updates. These updates were released in January 2024 to address a security vulnerability in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) that could potentially be exploited by hackers to bypass BitLocker Encryption.

However, users encountered issues with the installation of these updates, specifically the 0x80070643 error that indicated an Error Install Failure. The root cause of this error was identified as insufficient disk space in the recovery partition, preventing the updates from being installed successfully.

After several unsuccessful attempts to install the updates manually, Microsoft acknowledged the issue as a known issue and confirmed that it could not be resolved through a Windows Update. As a result, users were required to patch their computers manually to address the problem.

Microsoft provided instructions on how to patch the WinRE recovery partition, offering two methods for users to choose from. They could either manually add an update package to the partition or extend the size of the Windows RE partition by running a script provided by Microsoft. Once the partition’s size was extended, users could check for updates in the Settings app to install the KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates.

According to updated documents on Microsoft’s website, the KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates will not be offered to users under certain conditions. These conditions include the requirement of 250 MB of free space in the WinRE recovery partition, the absence of a WinRE recovery partition, or if the WinRE recovery partition has already been updated manually.

Users can verify the status of their WinRE recovery partition by running a command in an elevated command prompt. If the Windows RE Status is enabled, users will need to update it manually to be eligible for the updates. Additionally, users with specific operating systems, such as Windows 10 Home and Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise and Education, may be affected by these conditions.

As a side note, Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 versions 21H2 and 22H2 will reach end of support in October. This information provides users with valuable insights into the requirements and limitations surrounding the installation of the KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates.
