Microsoft’s latest endeavor in image enhancement, the AI-powered super resolution feature for the Photos app in Windows 11, has encountered a rocky start. Designed specifically for Copilot+ PCs equipped with powerful neural processing units (NPUs), this innovative capability allows users to enlarge images by up to eight times, transforming low-quality photos into sharper, more visually appealing versions suitable for large prints.
Unexpected Rollout Issues
Initially intended for testing among Windows Insiders, reports from leaker PhantomOfEarth indicate that the super resolution feature began appearing on devices outside its intended scope. This suggests that some non-Copilot+ PCs were inadvertently granted access to a feature that requires specific hardware capabilities.
In response to the confusion, Microsoft acknowledged the issue, stating, “We investigated and fixed an issue where super resolution was appearing on PCs it shouldn’t be. The fix is rolling out now.” However, this update seems to have inadvertently removed the feature from supported Copilot+ PCs as well, leaving many users without access to the enhancement tool they were meant to have.
It appears that Microsoft’s adjustments to the super resolution deployment may have been overly cautious, leading to a situation where the feature is now inaccessible to those who need it most. As the company works to rectify these complications, users are left hoping for a swift resolution to restore functionality to the Photos app.
