Microsoft will hide Windows 11’s annoying MSN feed by default as it moves to reduce ads and noise across the OS

Microsoft has unveiled new preview builds for Windows 11, introducing a noteworthy adjustment aimed at enhancing user experience by making the operating system lighter and less intrusive. In a recent blog post, the company announced that the Widgets Panel will now default to hiding the MSN feed, shifting the focus to a more tailored and customizable Widgets interface.

Enhancements to the Widgets Experience

This change marks a significant departure from the previous setup, where the Widgets Panel would automatically display the MSN feed upon opening. With the latest update, users will be greeted by their selected Widgets, which may include options such as Weather, OneDrive, and more, rather than the usual barrage of ads and clickbait content that characterized the MSN feed.

Additionally, Microsoft is refining the default behaviors associated with the Widgets Panel. The panel will no longer open automatically when hovering over the weather icon on the Taskbar, and the icon will display only the weather unless users opt to include other information, such as stock updates.

This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader Windows K2 project, launched in the latter half of the previous year, aimed at addressing some of the most pressing concerns surrounding Windows 11. The company is actively responding to user feedback and is committed to reducing ads, artificial intelligence clutter, and unnecessary bloat within the operating system.

By eliminating the default display of the MSN feed, Microsoft is taking a significant step toward minimizing the number of ads presented to users right out of the box. Now, if users wish to see the MSN feed, they will need to manually set it as their default view within the Widgets Panel.
