During a recent Qualcomm event, a conversation unfolded between Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon and Google’s head of platforms and devices, Rick Osterloh, hinting at the imminent arrival of Android for PCs. Their discussion, which can be viewed starting at the 53-minute mark, suggested a bold new direction for the operating system.
Bridging the Gap
Osterloh articulated a vision of unification, stating, “In the past, we’ve always had very different systems between what we’re building on PCs and what we’re building on smartphones, and we’ve embarked on a project to combine that.” This initiative aims to create a shared technical foundation for both PC and desktop computing systems, indicating a strategic move towards integration.
Further elaborating on this vision, Osterloh expressed Google’s intent to incorporate its Android AI features and applications into the PC ecosystem. Amon chimed in, sharing his enthusiasm for the experimental Android OS for PCs, describing it as “incredible.” While specific details regarding the launch timeline and distribution remain elusive, the prospect of Android laptops appears to be on the horizon.

Additionally, Google confirmed earlier this year its intention to merge ChromeOS, the operating system that powers Chromebook laptops, with Android.
