Having graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English literature and computer science, Prince received enticing job offers from notable companies such as Yahoo, Microsoft, and Netscape. However, he declined these opportunities, admitting he was “an arrogant young kid” with aspirations of becoming a cybersecurity lawyer. Instead, he chose to enroll at the University of Chicago Law School, which later led him to a teaching position in law.

In a candid interview with Business Insider, Prince reflected on his early career choices, stating, “Figuring out a way to get to some company that’s somewhere between 2,000 and 20,000 employees, and is working on interesting projects — that’s the thing that I wish I had.” During the height of the dot-com boom, when companies like Microsoft were at the forefront of innovation, he recognized that accepting one of those roles could have provided him with invaluable experience and a network of colleagues.
Prince elaborated on the potential benefits of joining a fast-growing company, noting that it would have exposed him to “a bunch of interesting problems” and “some real scale.” He emphasized the importance of building connections, saying, “The camaraderie and the rolodex and the interesting people that you will meet in that, is just such a huge accelerant to your career.”
While he does not regret turning down later job offers that did not align with his interests, such as a bankruptcy attorney position when he was focused on securities law, Prince maintains that his law degree has been instrumental in navigating the legal complexities faced by his company. He expressed that his advice to his younger self stems from a desire to experience the dynamic environment of a thriving company, akin to today’s Stripe or Twin Base.
Reflecting on the trajectory of his career, Prince acknowledged that while he might have missed out on certain opportunities, his unique path ultimately allowed him to build a company that harmonizes his interests and educational background. The dot-com bubble’s eventual burst may have spared him from potential pitfalls, reinforcing the notion that every decision contributes to the larger narrative of one’s professional journey.
