Microsoft has unveiled the ISO install media for Windows 11 version 25H2, marking the next chapter in its annual feature update cycle. As of September 10, these official ISOs are accessible through the Windows Insider download page, allowing testers to embark on a clean installation journey ahead of the update’s anticipated general availability later this year.
Key Features and Updates
The release of Build 26200.5074 to the Release Preview Channel on August 29 signifies a strategic approach by Microsoft, as the update is delivered as an “enablement package.” This methodology allows the new features to be layered over the existing 24H2 base, rather than necessitating a complete overhaul with a new build. This technique mirrors the approach taken in previous fall updates, such as 22H2 and 23H2, facilitating a more efficient update process that preserves core system components.
Weighing in at approximately 7 GB, depending on the selected language, Windows 11 version 25H2 introduces several significant enhancements, particularly for managed Enterprise and Education devices. Administrators now have the capability to uninstall a curated selection of Microsoft Store apps, which aligns with the company’s broader initiative to simplify business deployments. Additionally, outdated legacy tools, including PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC, have been phased out, reflecting a commitment to modernizing the user experience.
It is important to note that support for 25H2 will commence with its general availability, rather than during the preview phase. While many devices are still transitioning to 24H2, which was finalized earlier this year and is set to receive updates for 24 months (or 36 months for Enterprise/Education), the introduction of 25H2 will effectively reset this timeline. Testers who adopt the new version now will benefit from an extended period of security features and updates.
Although Microsoft has yet to announce a specific launch date for 25H2, historical patterns suggest that general availability may occur in October, aligning with the company’s established release schedule.
