Windows 11 Version 26H2: A Focus on Support Cycles
Microsoft has unveiled Windows 11 version 26H2, designated with build number 26300.9278, now available in the Release Preview Channel for Windows Insiders. This latest iteration, while perhaps lacking in groundbreaking features, is significant in its strategic focus on support cycles rather than sweeping changes.
The core of this update revolves around extending the support cycle for users transitioning to the 26H2 release. Since late 2024, Microsoft has been rolling out support and updates across all operating system branches, ensuring that each new release cycle activates essential features rather than allowing them to remain dormant within the kernel.
Central to this process are enablement packages (eKBs), which play a crucial role in the update mechanism. When users download an update, they are essentially activating specific functionalities through these eKBs. For example, a device currently running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2 will require only a straightforward eKB to upgrade to the latest 26H2 version. In contrast, users on older servicing branches like 22H2 and 23H2 will experience a full feature update when moving to 26H2.
In conjunction with the release of 26H2, Microsoft has also rolled out the KB5120996 update for Windows 11 26H1. This version is tailored specifically for Windows-on-Arm devices, including the Snapdragon X2 Elite and NVIDIA RTX Spark, among others. The KB5120996 update aligns with the enhancements introduced in the KB5120998 update for the 24H2 and 25H2 branches, offering features such as:

- Start Menu customization
- Overall performance improvements
