Windows 11 is getting 6GHz hotspot support, here is how to try it

Enhancements in Windows 11: Embracing the 6GHz Hotspot

With the recent rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft has officially introduced support for Wi-Fi 7, marking a significant step forward in network capabilities. This update is now accessible for users with compatible hardware, providing an opportunity to explore the latest advancements in connectivity.

In addition to this major update, Microsoft is also focusing on another noteworthy enhancement within its operating system. Currently available in public preview builds, this feature allows users to share their internet connection via a 6GHz hotspot. Traditionally, stable versions of Windows 11 have permitted the use of 5GHz or 2.4GHz hotspots, but as the 6GHz frequency gains traction, Microsoft is keen to leverage its advantages, including increased bandwidth and reduced interference.

The capability to create a 6GHz hotspot is included in Windows 11 build 26120.1912 and later versions. As this feature is gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders, some users may not have immediate access. However, for those eager to test it out, there is a way to enable 6GHz tethering using the ViVeTool application.

  • First, download ViVeTool from GitHub and extract the files to a convenient location on your computer.
  • Next, open Command Prompt with Administrator privileges and navigate to the folder containing the ViVeTool files using the CD command. For instance, if you placed ViVeTool in C:Vive, you would type CD C:Vive.
  • Then, enter vivetool /enable /id:40466470,48433719 and hit Enter.
  • Finally, restart your computer to apply the changes.

It is important to note that enabling 6GHz tethering necessitates compatible hardware. Specifically, your computer must be equipped with a Wi-Fi 6E-compatible network card. Users with Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 5, or older network cards will find that Windows 11 restricts them to 5GHz or 2.4GHz hotspots. Additionally, Microsoft advises that not all Wi-Fi 6E network cards support the 6GHz hotspot functionality.

For those with the appropriate network card and feature ID activated, enabling 6GHz tethering is straightforward. Simply navigate to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot > Network Properties and select 6GHz from the Network Band drop-down menu.

Special thanks to @PhantomOfEarth on X for providing the necessary feature IDs.
