Windows 11: Microsoft is finally adding an option to turn off one of the most annoying things

Among the myriad features of Windows 11, users have voiced their frustrations, with the inclusion of the “start backup” option in File Explorer emerging as a notable irritant. This feature appears prominently in the address bar when navigating to certain directories, such as Pictures or Documents, serving as a prompt to back up files to OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud storage solution.

For those who do not utilize OneDrive, the persistent presence of this reminder can be particularly vexing. While uninstalling OneDrive is one way to eliminate the “start backup” prompt, this approach is only feasible for users who do not rely on Microsoft’s file hosting services. Many Windows 11 users find themselves unwittingly linked to OneDrive, as it is deeply integrated into the operating system and tied to Microsoft accounts.

Disable Start Backup Option is Coming to Windows 11

In a recent development, Windows detective PhantomOfEarth has uncovered a new feature in the latest beta build released by Microsoft. This update introduces an option to permanently disable backup reminders in File Explorer, a user-friendly enhancement that has taken nearly a year to materialize.

Currently, right-clicking on the “start backup” option yields no response in stable builds. However, in the beta version, users are presented with two choices:

  • Remind me in 1 month.
  • Turn off reminder.

The first option temporarily hides the prompt, while the second removes it permanently. Once disabled, Windows replaces the “start backup” entry with a generic PC icon. It is important to note that even after disabling the reminders, Microsoft continues to provide information via a small popup, indicating that the backup reminder is off. This popup includes instructions for re-enabling the feature, which can only be done through OneDrive settings, not directly from File Explorer.

How to Enable the Option

PhantomOfEarth has pointed out that this feature is disabled by default. To enable it, users can follow these steps, which may also be beneficial once the feature is rolled out to stable builds:

  1. Download the latest version of ViVeTool from the GitHub repository.
  2. Extract the Zip archive to your local system.
  3. Open the Start menu.
  4. Type cmd.
  5. Select “Run as administrator” from the context options.
  6. Navigate to the ViVeTool directory using the command CD PATH, e.g., C:ViVeTool.
  7. Run the command vivetool /enable /id:47944061.
  8. Restart your PC.

Upon checking File Explorer after the restart, users should find the new option available when right-clicking on the “start backup” listing.

Do you use OneDrive or another file synchronization service for backups? Or do you prefer alternative methods? We welcome your thoughts in the comments below.
