Microsoft is set to enhance the functionality of Task Manager in its upcoming Windows 11 update, introducing a more sophisticated method for calculating CPU utilization. This change aims to align Task Manager’s performance metrics with those provided by popular third-party tools, thereby improving its effectiveness for users.
Windows 11 Update Will Make CPU Monitoring Much More Effective With Task Manager, Potentially Avoiding The Need For Third-Party Apps
The tech giant has recognized that the current performance metrics available through Task Manager fall short when compared to the detailed insights offered by external applications. In response, the forthcoming update will implement a standardized approach to CPU utilization calculations, ensuring consistency across various pages within Task Manager, including Processes, Performance, and Users.
We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.

While the specifics of the new calculation method remain under wraps, the unification of metrics across all pages promises to eliminate discrepancies between Task Manager and third-party platforms. This enhancement means that users may find less need to rely on external applications like HWINFO, as Task Manager will now provide a more comprehensive overview of CPU performance.
For those who prefer the existing calculation method, Microsoft has thoughtfully introduced an optional column labeled CPU Utility within the “Details” tab. This feature allows users to maintain backward compatibility while still benefiting from the new updates.
Currently, these enhancements are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, which is included in the 24H2 update. As the rollout progresses, users can look forward to a more optimized experience, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to improving consumer satisfaction and functionality within its operating system.
