Experiencing sluggish performance with Windows 11 search can be frustrating, but there’s no need to panic. With a little patience and some straightforward troubleshooting, you can address the underlying issues and restore a smooth search experience.
Start with basic fixes
The SearchHost.exe process plays a crucial role in indexing your files, enabling quick access through Windows search. If this service encounters problems, a simple restart might do the trick. To restart it:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
- Navigate to the Details tab.
- Right-click on SearchHost.exe and select End Task.
This action will force the process to close and restart, potentially resolving your search issues.
If clicking the search icon on the taskbar yields no response, the problem may lie with the Windows Explorer process. To rectify this, return to the Task Manager:
- Go to the Processes tab.
- Right-click on Windows Explorer and select Restart.
Your taskbar will briefly disappear and reappear, which should fix any UI glitches affecting the search function.
Additionally, an outdated version of Windows can contribute to search problems. To ensure your system is up to date:

- Type rstrui.exe and hit Enter.
