Windows 11 will add a new way to talk to Microsoft Copilot — no Copilot key required

Microsoft is making strides to enhance user interaction with its Copilot feature on PCs, currently being tested by Windows Insiders. The introduction of a press to talk functionality promises to streamline communication with the AI-powered tool, allowing users to engage without disrupting their workflow.

This innovative feature enables users to summon Copilot using a simple keyboard shortcut. By holding down the Alt + Spacebar for two seconds, users can initiate a voice conversation with Copilot. To conclude the interaction, a quick press of the Esc key suffices. For those moments of silence, Copilot is designed to automatically end the conversation after a brief pause, ensuring a seamless experience.

The rollout of this update to the Copilot app is currently underway via the Microsoft Store, but users will need to ensure their app version is at least 1.25024.100.0 to access the new feature. As the deployment is gradual, some users may not see the option immediately, even if their app is up to date.

New Microsoft Copilot app

In addition to the press to talk feature, Microsoft has recently begun previewing a revamped Copilot app for Windows 11. This new application leverages the company’s native app UI framework, enhancing its integration within the Windows ecosystem. Users can expect a more cohesive look and feel, as the app incorporates native elements that make it appear more aligned with the Windows 11 aesthetic.

Performance improvements are also noteworthy; the new Copilot app launches more quickly and operates more efficiently than its web-based predecessor. Furthermore, users now have the flexibility to choose whether they want the app to start automatically upon booting their PC, adding a layer of customization to their experience.

While the addition of the press to talk feature is a welcome enhancement, some users have expressed surprise at the chosen keyboard shortcut. With many new PCs featuring a dedicated Copilot key, it seems a natural fit for such a feature. However, the prevalence of older keyboards lacking this key likely influenced the decision to utilize Alt + Space instead. Looking ahead, there is hope for an option to engage the feature using a combination like Alt + Copilot, which could further simplify user interaction.
