Windows 11’s April update is now breaking third-party backup apps

A few weeks ago, Microsoft rolled out update KB5083769 for Windows 11, which was intended to enhance security with several critical fixes. However, this update has not been without its challenges. Users have reported a variety of issues, including BitLocker lockouts, unexpected boot loops, and a troublesome bug affecting Remote Desktop functionality.

Compatibility Issues with Backup Software

As we move further into May, reports indicate that the KB5083769 update is also creating significant compatibility problems with numerous third-party backup applications. Notable programs affected include Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, Macrium Reflect, NinjaOne Backup, and UrBackup Server.

The root of these complications seems to lie within a bug in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). This essential Windows service is responsible for creating point-in-time snapshots of files, enabling seamless backup recovery without disruption. When this service falters, as it has with the latest update, the functionality of backup software is severely compromised.

According to insights from BleepingComputer, users facing backup failures are recommended to uninstall the problematic update KB5083769. This action is suggested as a temporary measure to restore the functionality of their backup applications until Microsoft can provide a resolution and release a patch. As of now, the timeline for addressing these compatibility issues remains uncertain.
