Microsoft is enhancing the synergy between Android devices and Windows PCs by integrating Nearby Share into its Phone Link app. This development, currently available in the Preview Channel, is set to roll out to public versions of Windows in the near future.
For some time now, Windows users have enjoyed the convenience of connecting their Android phones to their PCs, allowing them to manage messages and view photos without needing to pick up their smartphones. The Phone Link app aims to create a seamless experience akin to that of using devices within a single ecosystem, such as a Galaxy Book paired with a Galaxy phone. However, many users have found this experience somewhat lacking in polish and efficiency.
The introduction of Nearby Share marks a significant step forward in bridging the gap between these two platforms. When an Android device and a Windows PC are linked through Phone Link, users will find Nearby Share readily accessible in the native share menu for files and similar items. This feature operates independently from Google’s Quick Share app, which, while functional, requires opening a new window to share files. In comparison, the Phone Link integration streamlines the process, reducing the number of clicks needed to complete a file transfer.
How to use Windows’ new native Nearby Share
Initially, Nearby Share will be available to users on the Windows Insider channel for both Windows 10 and 11. This channel allows early access to updates, although it should be approached with caution as it functions as a beta program. For those on the public release channel, the feature is expected to be included in an upcoming update.
To utilize this new feature, users must first connect their Android phone to their PC via Phone Link. This can be accomplished by downloading the Link to Windows app from the Google Play Store and following the setup instructions provided in the Phone Link app on the PC.
Once the connection is established, sharing files becomes a straightforward process:
- Locate the file you wish to share on your PC.
- Right-click the file and select Share.
- In the Nearby Share section, choose My Phone (Android).
- The file transfer will commence, and a notification will appear on your phone.
Users can also send files from their Android phones to their PCs, although this does not utilize the Quick Share menu. Instead, the Link to Windows Send to PC option must be selected.
This capability was previously available through Google’s Nearby Share app, but integrating it into the native sharing menu significantly enhances user experience by saving time and effort. While this feature is currently exclusive to the Windows Insider program, it is anticipated to become publicly available soon.
