Windows Mobile Plans are being cut for good – here’s what we know, and what you can do next

Microsoft has officially announced the discontinuation of its Mobile Plans service, with the app set to cease operations on February 27, 2026. This decision marks a significant shift in how users will connect their PCs to mobile data, as the app will be removed from both Windows and the Microsoft Store immediately.

Transitioning to a New Experience

In a recent blog post, Microsoft emphasized its commitment to simplifying the connection process between PCs and mobile networks. The company stated that while users will still be able to link their devices to mobile networks, they will no longer do so through the Mobile Plans app. Instead, a more integrated experience will be introduced via Windows Settings, allowing for a smoother transition.

For those who have previously connected their PCs to mobile networks using the old method, existing connections will remain functional. However, management of these connections will now require users to navigate to their mobile operator’s website rather than relying on the Mobile Plans interface.

One of the notable advancements accompanying this transition is the introduction of eSIMs, which will eliminate the need for codes or QR scans. Windows Insiders can already access this feature, with a public rollout expected in the latter half of 2025.

Preparing for Change

Microsoft has assured users that it will provide updated documentation to guide them through the upcoming changes. While the new interface promises to enhance user experience, mobile carriers may face challenges in adapting their systems to accommodate the new Windows activation flow, which is essential for sharing device identifiers.

Although Microsoft will offer support to carriers, the timeline for their adaptation remains uncertain. Some “select partners” have already participated in a trial and feedback group established in June 2025. However, inquiries regarding the identities of these partners have not yet been addressed by Microsoft.

For users concerned about their carrier’s readiness for the new system, it may be prudent to address any potential issues sooner rather than later, as the Mobile Plans app continues to function in the interim.
