Windows Update Will Start Showing New Insider Channel System to all Windows 11 Users

The Windows Insider Channel system, which made its debut earlier this year, is now set to expand its reach to all Windows 11 users through Windows Update. In the coming weeks, non-Insiders will have the opportunity to join the program and will notice a shift from the previous Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels to the newly introduced Experimental and Beta Channel options.

Understanding the New Channel Experience

The Windows Insider team has announced that this revamped Insider Channel experience aims to provide clarity for users regarding what they can expect to test. However, some users have expressed that the program has become more perplexing, particularly with the ongoing testing of Windows 11 version 26H1, which is currently available across all Insider Channels but remains inaccessible to non-Insiders.

To clarify the roles of the new channels:

  • Experimental Channel: This channel is where new features are typically introduced first, and user feedback plays a crucial role in shaping future developments. Insiders participating in this channel can also manage specific features through the new Feature Flags page found in the Windows Insider Program settings.
  • Beta Channel: This channel continues to provide early access to upcoming Windows 11 features. However, Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of controlled feature rollouts (CFRs) in this channel, although some A/B testing for new features will still occur.

Despite these updates, tracking changes across the various Insider Channels remains a challenge. Recently, Microsoft released five new builds across the Beta and Experimental Channels, following a record-setting day with seven Insider builds just two weeks prior. Among the most noteworthy updates is the introduction of a new taskbar size setting in the Experimental build 26300.8758, part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the customizability of the Windows 11 taskbar, which has undergone a complete redesign.
