Microsoft is enhancing its Notepad and Snipping Tool applications within Windows 11, introducing innovative AI features that promise to elevate user experience. However, users should note that access to some of these features will require a subscription.

Notepad’s new AI feature

In a significant update, Notepad now allows users to summarize text directly within the app. By simply pasting text and utilizing the Copilot menu, users can engage the Summarize feature. Alternatively, pressing Ctrl-M after selecting text will generate a summary in a convenient popover. It’s important to highlight that this feature is gated behind a Microsoft 365 subscription and requires Copilot Pro AI credits for full access. Reports indicate that all AI functionalities in Notepad will be restricted to Microsoft 365 subscribers.

In addition to the summarization capability, Microsoft has also introduced a much-anticipated feature that enables users to view recently opened files in Notepad. This addition, which many consider a fundamental enhancement, allows users to navigate through their recent documents effortlessly. To access this feature, users can go to File > Recent in Notepad, and they also have the option to clear the list of recent files if desired. These updates are part of Notepad’s version 11.2501.29.0.

The Snipping Tool, Windows 11’s native screenshot application, is also receiving a noteworthy upgrade. The latest beta version simplifies the process of drawing shapes on screenshots. Users can now draw an arrow, and the Snipping Tool will automatically convert it into a straight line with a pointer, streamlining the annotation process. This enhancement eliminates the need to select specific shapes, allowing for a more fluid and efficient user experience. This update is available with Snipping Tool version 11.2502.18.0.

How to access the newest Windows 11 features

For those eager to explore these new features, joining the Windows Insider program is essential. Participants should be aware that this may involve running unstable builds of Windows 11, which could lead to system crashes or compatibility issues. It is advisable to back up your machine before proceeding.

To join the Windows Insider program, visit the Microsoft website on your Windows 11 PC and click the Register button. After registration, navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. To receive the latest updates discussed, users must be on either the Dev or Canary channels of the Windows 11 Insider program.
