Microsoft Is Finally Making Installation of Windows Updates a Breeze

In a notable development for Windows users, Steve DiAcetis from the Windows Fundamentals team has shared insights into the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update, which promises to significantly enhance the update installation experience.

Improved Installation Efficiency

According to DiAcetis, the new version is designed to streamline the update process, resulting in reduced installation times, quicker restarts, and lower CPU usage during updates. This announcement comes as a relief to many who have long found the update process to be a cumbersome task.

  • Initial tests conducted on a well-maintained device showed a remarkable 45.6% faster installation time when transitioning from Windows 11 22H2 to 24H2.
  • Restart times also improved by 39.7%, while CPU usage dropped by 15.3%.

The testing did not stop there. A separate evaluation was performed on a PC that had not received updates for 18 months. This system demonstrated an impressive 43.6% faster installation speed, with a 33.5% quicker restart and a 25% reduction in CPU usage.

Streamlined Update Size

DiAcetis further noted that the size of feature updates has been reduced by approximately 200 MB. This reduction was achieved by integrating system applications such as Settings and File Explorer into the monthly updates, while other applications like Mail, Calendar, and Notepad will now require updates through the Microsoft Store.

As anticipation builds for the rollout of Windows 11 24H2, users are left hopeful that these enhancements will transform the often-dreaded update process into a more efficient and user-friendly experience. The true test will come once the update is widely available, but for now, the outlook appears promising.
