An end to rebooting? Microsoft’s latest change means you won’t need to restart your work laptop for every Windows update any more

In a move that promises to enhance user experience and security, Microsoft is rolling out hotpatching capabilities to a broader audience of Windows users. This innovative feature is set to transform the way updates are handled, particularly for those utilizing Windows 11 Enterprise and Microsoft 365.

Gone are the days of abrupt interruptions caused by mandatory reboots following updates. With the introduction of rebootless updates, users can now download and install security updates through the existing Windows Updates program without the need to pause their work. This development is poised to be a game-changer for professionals who rely on uninterrupted workflow.

Windows 11 hotpatch updates

As explained by Microsoft’s David Callaghan in a recent blog post, hotpatch updates are specifically designed to deliver a comprehensive set of operating system security patches. These updates are unique in that they activate immediately upon installation, eliminating the need for a device restart. This feature not only enhances user focus but also ensures rapid protection against potential threats.

The advantages of hotpatching extend beyond mere convenience. By updating the in-memory code, hotpatching significantly reduces system downtime associated with security patches. This means that updates can be installed more swiftly while consuming fewer disk and CPU resources, as there is no need for additional binaries. The result is a smoother, more efficient update process that aligns with the demands of modern business environments.

Moreover, Microsoft emphasizes that hotpatching leads to improved security. The update packages are tailored specifically for Windows security updates, allowing for quicker installations without the disruption of a restart. This not only minimizes the time systems are vulnerable to security risks but also streamlines patch management through tools like Azure Update Manager.

Hotpatching has been in the experimental phase for some time, having been available for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition since February 2022, as well as the upcoming Windows Server 2025. However, as of now, there is no indication that this feature will extend to other Windows editions, leaving Windows 11 Home and Pro users awaiting further developments. For business and enterprise users, though, the reboot-less update process is now within reach.

Callaghan concluded with optimism about the future of Windows security: “With hotpatch updates, you can quickly take measures to help protect your organization from the evolving landscape of cyberattacks, while minimizing user disruptions. Hotpatching represents a significant advancement in our journey to help make you and everyone who uses Windows more secure and productive.”
