Reports of widespread outages across Meta’s key social media platforms have surfaced this evening, as users encounter significant difficulties with WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook. According to Downdetector, the first signs of trouble emerged around 5:45 PM, with a notable surge in users struggling to log into their Facebook accounts. Currently, over half of the affected users are experiencing login issues, with 33% reporting app-related problems and 11% facing difficulties on the website.
Instagram and Messenger Face Similar Challenges
As the clock approached 6 PM, Instagram users began to report their own set of challenges. A staggering 65% of users are grappling with app issues, while 20% are unable to connect to the server, and 14% are encountering problems with the website. Meanwhile, Facebook Messenger is not faring any better, with 68% of users experiencing app-related troubles, 27% struggling to log in, and 5% unable to send messages.
WhatsApp users are also feeling the impact, with nearly 80% reporting difficulties in sending messages. Additionally, 13% are facing issues with the app itself, and 8% are encountering server-related problems. This incident is reminiscent of a similar outage that occurred in March, when users flocked to alternative social media platforms to voice their frustrations while reporting issues to Downdetector.
Interestingly, despite being under the Meta umbrella, WhatsApp appears to be operating smoothly, unaffected by the current disruptions. In contrast, Instagram users are met with a persistent ‘Try Again’ message, while Facebook has logged users out, rejecting all password attempts as ‘incorrect.’ Many have attempted to reset their passwords, only to be thwarted by the same error message.
