In a significant advancement for digital identification, Google Wallet is now rolling out the capability to add your passport as a form of ID within its Android app. Following a successful testing phase in October, this feature is now available to users, providing a convenient option for domestic travel within the United States, particularly for those whose states do not offer a digital ID.
To utilize this feature, users can navigate to the “Add to Wallet” option located in the bottom-right corner of the app. From there, selecting “ID” will present two choices: “Driver’s license or state ID” and the newly introduced “ID pass.” The process to add your passport is straightforward and consists of three main steps:
- Take a picture of your passport’s information page or enter the details manually.
- Scan the security chip located inside the back cover of your passport by following these steps:
- Place your passport on a flat surface.
- Open the back cover of your passport.
- Remove your phone case to ensure a clear scan.
- Slowly move the back of your phone around the inside back cover to locate the chip.
- Record a brief video of your face, which Google will review to confirm your identity and match it with your passport photo.
This innovative feature is now available with version 24.47.35 of Google Play services for Android devices running version 9 and above. At airport security checkpoints, travelers can conveniently use their digital passport by either scanning a QR code or tapping their phone near the NFC reader, followed by an approval of the transmitted information.
It is important to note that while this digital passport ID offers added convenience, it is not a government-issued ID and should not be considered a replacement for physical identification. Users are advised to keep their physical IDs on hand as needed, especially since this feature does not support international travel.
In the event of a lost phone, users can easily remove their ID pass by visiting myaccount.google.com. For those looking for detailed instructions, comprehensive guidance is available online.
