CrossOver 25 brings Red Dead Redemption 2 and more to macOS

Mac gamers are likely well-acquainted with CrossOver, the innovative platform that allows users to run Windows applications seamlessly on macOS and Linux. CodeWeavers, the driving force behind this versatile application, has unveiled CrossOver 25, introducing a host of enhancements, including expanded game support featuring the much-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2.

What’s new with CrossOver 25

The developers have meticulously crafted CrossOver 25, incorporating over 5,000 changes aimed at bolstering compatibility for a wide array of applications and games on both macOS and Linux. This latest iteration is built on Wine 10.0, which brings improved HiDPI support for Retina displays and upgraded Vulkan drivers, enhancing the overall user experience.

For Mac users, the introduction of a new configuration system simplifies the gaming experience, allowing players to dive into their favorite titles without the need for additional modifications or game-specific CrossTies. Notable games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 now operate smoothly without requiring patches. Additionally, multiplayer functionality has been enabled for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, enriching the gaming landscape.

A standout feature of CrossOver 25 is its support for Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2, which now runs natively on Mac systems. Other newly supported titles include Street Fighter 6, Need for Speed Heat, Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition, Teardown, Age of Wonders 4, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and The Last of Us Part 1, broadening the gaming options available to Mac users.

Moreover, CrossOver 25 introduces DXMT, a Metal-based implementation of Direct3D 11, which will be offered alongside wined3d, DXVK, and D3DMetal. This flexibility allows users to select the option that best suits their system’s capabilities, with DXMT promising enhanced performance on Macs with lower specifications.

Last year’s CrossOver 24 saw significant improvements in the support for 32-bit applications and games on macOS, setting a solid foundation for this latest release.
