YouTube Music now lets you ‘sing or hum’ to search on Android

A Melodic Update for YouTube Music Users

Android users of YouTube Music are in for a treat as the platform introduces a new feature designed to make song searches as simple as humming a melody. A fresh server-side update is gradually making its way to users, unveiling an innovative wavelength icon that beckons users to interact with the app’s artificial intelligence in a new way.

Upon tapping the search icon within the app, a vibrant wavelength symbol appears, inviting users to “play, hum, or sing” snippets of songs they wish to identify. This intuitive approach leverages the AI’s capabilities to recognize tunes and provide users with the answers they seek.

When the AI successfully identifies a song, it presents users with a visually appealing results page. This page showcases the album cover, song title, artist or group name, the year of the album’s release, and offers a play button along with a save option to add the track to a playlist for future enjoyment.

For those who have ever been haunted by an elusive tune, this feature promises a sense of relief. YouTube Music ensures continuity in the song identification process by retaining the wavelength symbol at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to initiate a new search without the need to navigate back to the main search page. Additionally, for those looking to keep a copy of their newfound tracks, the app hints at a download option likely nestled within a three-dot menu.

Although the feature has been spotted in the 7.02 version of YouTube Music, its availability is dependent on a server-side update. Users are encouraged to update their app to the latest version to increase their chances of experiencing this new functionality. However, it’s worth noting that the feature may not appear immediately for everyone, as these rollouts can be staggered over time.

The concept of humming to identify a song isn’t entirely new, as Google’s own search app has offered a similar feature for some time now. Google’s “Now Playing” feature on Pixel phones also provides song identification services, keeping an ear out for music in the environment and notifying users of the track names.

In related updates, YouTube Music’s Gemini extension has also made its debut for Android and desktop users, allowing them to request AI assistance in finding specific songs by familiar artists. While the feature is fully operational on Android, it seems there are still some kinks to iron out on the web version.
