Google’s Pixel Watch companion app is undergoing a significant transformation, as it embraces a light theme after a prolonged period dominated by dark aesthetics. This update, which has been quietly rolled out via a server-side change, allows users to experience a refreshing shift from the app’s previous moody blacks to a more vibrant and crisp white backdrop.
According to reports from 9to5Google, Pixel Watch owners have begun to notice this change while browsing through the app on their Android devices. Interestingly, there is no option within the app settings to toggle between themes, suggesting that Google has implemented this update without any user intervention. The last official app update, version 3.4, was released back in April, indicating that this new look is a result of Google’s behind-the-scenes adjustments.
Not syncing with your phone’s theme
While some users speculated that the app’s new light theme might be linked to their phone’s system-wide theme settings, there is currently no official confirmation to support this theory. Initial tests suggest that the app operates independently of the phone’s theme, maintaining its distinct aesthetic.
This move towards a lighter interface aligns with Google’s recent trend of refreshing its applications. Earlier this year, Pixel Studio also received a similar update, adopting a light theme. However, not all applications are following suit; for instance, the Clock app continues to adhere to its dark design.
Watch OS update coming soon?
As the Pixel Watch app enjoys its new look, the smartwatch itself is still awaiting a significant operating system update, anticipated for June. Speculation is rife regarding the potential introduction of Wear OS 6, which may be based on Android 16, during the upcoming Google I/O 2025 event. However, with no developer sessions currently scheduled, it appears that the Pixel Watch will continue operating on its existing Android 15 framework for the foreseeable future.
