This innovative platform leverages Bluetooth mesh networking, allowing users to exchange messages directly, bypassing traditional mobile data, Wi-Fi, servers, and even phone numbers.
What Is Bitchat And How Is It Built For Off-the-Grid Communication?
In stark contrast to conventional messaging applications like WhatsApp or Messenger, Bitchat operates on a fully peer-to-peer basis and does not require user accounts. The app ensures that messages are encrypted, temporary by default, and never interact with a central server. Users can communicate with devices within a 300-meter radius, enabling messages to be relayed even to individuals outside direct Bluetooth range as users move about. This functionality proves invaluable in areas with limited connectivity or during complete internet outages, reminiscent of the communication tools utilized during the 2019 protests in Hong Kong.

Dorsey’s recent endeavors, including the decentralized social media app Damus and the Bluesky protocol, reflect a steadfast commitment to digital sovereignty and user privacy. Bitchat continues this trend, featuring password-protected group chats, known as “rooms,” delayed message delivery for offline users, and plans for Wi-Fi Direct support to enhance range and speed. Notably, messages are stored solely on users’ devices and are designed to vanish over time, with no data collection or user identifiers required.
The launch of Bitchat aligns seamlessly with Dorsey’s overarching ambition to develop decentralized, censorship-resistant technologies. In a whitepaper accompanying the beta release, Bitchat is characterized as “a decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks… resilient to network outages and censorship.” Within mere hours of its introduction, all 10,000 beta slots were filled, showcasing the strong interest in this innovative approach to communication. Dorsey also shared links to the app’s GitHub repository and a draft protocol paper, candidly describing the initial version as “ugly” yet essential.
