Indie games platform Itch.io has taken significant steps to reshape its content offerings, responding to mounting pressure from payment providers. In a recent blog post, founder Leaf Corcoran detailed the platform’s decision to remove all adult NSFW titles, a move prompted by a campaign from the anti-porn group Collective Shout. This group has actively targeted both Itch.io and Steam, raising concerns that have reached the ears of their respective payment processors.
Compliance and Content Audit
To align with the requirements set forth by payment providers, Itch.io is embarking on a comprehensive audit of its content. Following this review, the platform plans to implement new measures aimed at ensuring compliance. Corcoran emphasized the importance of maintaining a robust payment processing system, stating, “Our ability to process payments is critical for every creator on our platform.” He further explained that prioritizing relationships with payment partners is essential for the platform’s continued operation and support for developers.
This situation has unfolded rapidly, prompting Itch.io to act swiftly to safeguard its core payment infrastructure. Corcoran acknowledged the abrupt nature of these changes, expressing regret for the lack of advance notice to creators. “We know this is not ideal, and we apologize for the abruptness of this change,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of the circumstances.
In a parallel development, Valve has also faced similar pressures, recently unveiling new and somewhat ambiguous guidelines regarding content allowed on Steam. This shift reflects the broader impact of Collective Shout’s campaign, which continues to influence the landscape of digital content distribution.
